Our Approach

Cheltenham Tutors exists because education is not simply about achieving the highest possible outcomes, but about helping children move towards the right outcomes for them, at the right time, and in the right way.

The work of Cheltenham Tutors is shaped by long experience in classrooms, schools, and family conversations, and by a belief that good educational support should be thoughtful, proportionate, and humane.

An Educational Approach Rooted in Judgement

Many families seek additional educational support because they are unsure what their child needs, or when intervention is genuinely helpful. Too often, the options presented to them are polarised: either minimal support, or highly intensive programmes that risk placing children under unnecessary pressure.

Cheltenham Tutors takes a different view.

We do not believe in “hot-housing”, acceleration for its own sake, or pushing children towards pathways that may not suit their temperament, stage of development, or wider well-being. This is particularly important in areas such as 11+ preparation, where the stakes can feel high and the narratives around success can become distorted.

Our role is not to promise results or to maximise performance at all costs. Instead, we aim to offer clear professional judgement, grounded in experience, that helps families think carefully about what support is appropriate, what is realistic, and what is genuinely in a child’s best interests.

The Importance of the Right Outcomes

Academic achievement matters. Confidence matters. Enjoyment of learning matters. So does emotional security, self-belief, and a sense of belonging.

Sometimes these things align neatly. Sometimes they do not.

Cheltenham Tutors works from the premise that the most educationally responsible outcome is not always the most competitive one, nor the one that looks most impressive on paper. In some cases, the right outcome is progress without pressure; in others, it is consolidation rather than acceleration; and sometimes it is helping families recognise that a particular pathway may not be right at a given moment.

This perspective shapes all of our work, whether supporting individual students or offering guidance to parents.

Professional Formation

Cheltenham Tutors was founded by William, an experienced teacher who has worked across a wide range of educational settings, including mainstream primary and middle schools, private schools, and special schools. He has taught across all key stages and has particular experience of the transition points where families often seek reassurance and clarity.

This breadth of experience matters. It informs not only what is taught, but how decisions are made about readiness, pacing, and expectations. Educational judgement develops over time, through exposure to different children, contexts, and outcomes — and it is this judgement that underpins the work of Cheltenham Tutors.

Education as a Social Good

Cheltenham Tutors is closely connected to Fairview Education, a local charity co-founded by William. Fairview Education provides free tuition to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, helping to widen access to high-quality educational support.

As part of this commitment, Cheltenham Tutors donates 2% of annual profits to Fairview Education. This reflects a belief that education should be ethical and socially responsible, not purely transactional.

Working Together

Cheltenham Tutors works best with families who value:

  • thoughtful, professional guidance

  • calm and proportionate support

  • an approach that considers the whole child

The aim is not simply to help children do more, faster, but to help them move forward with confidence, understanding, and care.
