When Should My Child Start Preparing for the 11+?

Many parents begin to think about the 11+ when their child reaches Year 5. At that point, the exam suddenly feels close, and families understandably want to ensure their child is prepared. However, the most effective preparation often begins earlier, not through intense exam practice, but through steadily building the core skills that the 11+ assesses.

At Cheltenham Tutors, we often encourage families to think of 11+ preparation as a gradual process rather than a last-minute sprint. The exam tests a combination of mathematical understanding, vocabulary, reasoning, and reading comprehension. These are skills that develop best over time through consistent practice and thoughtful teaching.

For many children, Year 4 is an ideal time to begin gentle preparation. At this stage, pupils are mature enough to start developing reasoning skills and tackling slightly more complex problems, but there is still plenty of time before the exam itself. Beginning in Year 4 allows children to build confidence and familiarity with different question types without feeling rushed.

Early preparation in Year 4 does not mean intensive exam drilling. Instead, it should focus on strengthening core foundations. In mathematics, this means secure number fluency, strong understanding of place value, and confidence with multi-step problems. In English, it means developing vocabulary, reading widely, and practising comprehension skills. Verbal and non-verbal reasoning can then be introduced gradually once these foundations are in place.

For some children, preparation may begin even earlier in subtle ways. Reading regularly at home, playing number games, discussing interesting words, and encouraging curiosity all help build the thinking skills that support success in the 11+. These activities strengthen the habits of mind that selective tests are designed to measure.

By the time children reach Year 5, preparation usually becomes a little more structured. This is when pupils begin practising a wider range of question types and developing strategies for approaching unfamiliar problems. The aim is not simply to learn techniques for a test, but to develop flexible thinking and resilience when tackling challenging questions.

One of the most important aspects of successful preparation is maintaining a positive relationship with learning. Children who feel supported and encouraged are far more likely to approach the 11+ with confidence. Small, supportive learning environments often help pupils ask questions, take risks, and develop deeper understanding.

At Cheltenham Tutors, we run small group sessions designed to provide exactly this kind of environment. Working in groups of up to four pupils allows each child to receive individual attention while also benefiting from collaborative learning. Lessons focus on developing strong foundations, building reasoning skills, and helping children become confident, independent learners.

Every child develops at a different pace, and there is no single perfect moment to begin preparing for the 11+. What matters most is creating steady progress, maintaining balance, and supporting children to enjoy the process of learning.
